In the fifteenth century, the voices of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and St. Margaret of Antioch called upon Joan to go to the King of France and help him reconquer his kingdom. At the age of 17 Joan was given a small army and enjoyed a series of spectacular military successes. Eventually captured by Burgundians, she was condemned and martyred for being a heretic, and burned at the stake at the age of 19.
